Understanding Hong Kong Income Tax

Hong Kong uses a progressive income tax system with very low tax rates. The tax year runs from April 1 to March 31. Here's what you need to know:

2024-2025 Tax Brackets

  • HK$0 - HK$50,000: 2%
  • HK$50,001 - HK$100,000: 6%
  • HK$100,001 - HK$150,000: 10%

  • HK$200,001 and above: 17%

Standard Rate: Taxpayers can choose to pay 15% standard rate on net chargeable income, whichever is lower.

Two-Tiered Standard Rate: For very high earners, a two-tiered standard rate applies (7.5% on first HK$5,000,000, 15% on excess).

Basic Allowance

All taxpayers receive a basic allowance of HK$132,000, which is deducted from gross income before calculating tax.

MPF (Mandatory Provident Fund)

MPF is Hong Kong's mandatory retirement savings scheme. Both employees and employers contribute 5% of salary (capped at HK$1,500 per month for employees).
